John F. Lightner 1936-2025

NILES — John F. Lightner, 89, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital following a short illness.
He was born Aug. 13, 1936, in Niles, the son of John P. and Elizabeth Carris Lightner.
Jack, as he was known by family and friends, was a lifelong member of St. Stephen Church in Niles. Jack graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. His career started at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, then retiring from RMI Company in Niles, where he was the plant electrical engineer. An avid outdoorsman, Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, his trips to Canada with his friends and spending time at his hunting camp in Tionesta. He enjoyed cooking, watercolor painting, gardening, tying fishing flies and watching the Cleveland sports teams.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lee Hayes Lightner, whom he married on Jan. 29, 1966; two sisters, Charlene (Walter) May and Dianne (Roy) Setterberg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025, at St. Stephen Church, Niles.
Family and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Holloway-Williams Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 611 Robbins Ave., Niles, OH 44446, 330-652-2422.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to St. Stephen Church or the charity of their choice in Jack’s name.
