Joan E. Smith 1940-2025

Joan was born Dec. 6, 1940, in Youngstown, a daughter of Richard E. and Lillian Gray Wester.

She had worked for Northside Hospital, Costello’s Candies in Girard, the cafeteria for Liberty schools and Sam’s Club in Niles, but for most of her life, Joan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

Joan was a member of Church Hill United Methodist Church in Liberty Township and was formerly a member of the Red Hat Club and Garden Club. She enjoyed going to plays, and special outings and events with her friends. She loved Christian music and was an avid animal lover.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Bryan C. Smith of Austintown, Heather (Edwin) Baldwin of McDonald and Craig (Christina) Smith of Girard; sister, Carla Bartel of McDonald; brother, Gerald (Marilyn) Wester of Stow; and her grandchildren, Eddie Baldwin, Joey Baldwin, Chloe Baldwin and Annabelle Smith.

Besides her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Ivor G. Smith, whom she married June 12, 1965, and who died Sept. 23, 1997.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, at Blackstone Funeral Home, 672 Churchill Road in Girard, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 3 p.m. until the time of service.

Joan will be laid to rest in Crown Hill Cemetery next to her husband.
