Nancy Hoagland Sphar 1937-2025

BOLIVA, N.C. — Nancy Hoagland Sphar, 87, formerly of Southington, joined her beloved husband in heaven on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

She was born in Greenville, Pa., and grew up in Conneaut Lake, Pa.

On Dec. 14, 1957, she married William Sphar, and they were married until he died in 2024.

Nancy lived a long, full life with her family at the heart of all she valued. A proud homemaker for many years, she dedicated herself to raising her children and creating a warm, loving home.

In 1986, they moved to Oak Island, North Carolina, marking a new chapter in her life.

With her children grown, Nancy began exploring new opportunities beyond the home. She first worked in retail at the Hallmark store on Oak Island, then found her true calling as an information specialist for the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce, a role she held from 1990 until her retirement in 2019.

From an early age, Nancy was committed to community service. She served as treasurer of the Chaker High School Band Boosters, where she put her talents to work sewing dolls and making popcorn balls to help fundraise for the band. Her spirit of giving continued in North Carolina, where she became an integral part of many local events. She served for many years as chair of the NC 4th of July Festival Arts and Crafts Fair, managed the merchandise tent in the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament, and alongside her beloved husband, Bill, helped in the lineup area for the annual Christmas by the Sea Parade.

Nancy deeply loved her adopted home of Southport-Oak Island. Though small in stature, she was a force to be reckoned with — hardworking, fiery and deeply devoted to her family and community. Those who knew her remember her not just for what she did, but for how she made them feel — welcome, appreciated and inspired. Above all else, Nancy’s greatest love was her family and that love knew no bounds.

She leaves behind her daughters, Sandra (Alvin) Wolfe and Karen Spahr; her grandson, Jeffrey (Deneen) Wolfe; her great-granddaughters, Sofia and Ava Wolfe; her sister, Mary (John) Cox; and several nieces and nephews. Also missing her will be her adored dog, Midnight.

Preceding her death were her parents, Seth and Dorothy Hoagland.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in memory of William Sphar.
