Garry Frederick 1952-2025

CORTLAND — Garry Frederick, 73, passed away peacefully, Monday, July 21, 2025, at home surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born June 7, 1952, in Warren, to Richard and Nancy Rhine Frederick.

Garry attended Mathews High School and throughout his life, dedicated himself to serving his community.

Garry volunteered as a firefighter and EMT at the Fowler Fire Department and also served as a police officer for the Fowler Police Department. He worked as a self-employed truck driver before opening Top Notch Diner, a beloved staple in Cortland. Garry retired from Top Notch Diner in 2015 but continued to be involved in the daily operations until 2021, when he suffered a stroke during abdominal surgery to remove cancer. The diner, which he opened with the vision of creating a place where families could always come together over a meal, has now been thriving for 20 years, a testament to his hard work and passion for bringing people together.

Garry is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Raines Frederick; his three daughters, Shonna Bland, Michelle Silver (Michael) and Martha Frederick; and his 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply.

Garry’s legacy of dedication to his family, work and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Believers Traditional Church. Calling hours will be one hour before the celebration Thursday at the church.

A final drive from Top Notch Diner to the church will be leaving the diner at 12:30 p.m. Thursday as his final ride, a fitting tribute to his love of cars.

Flowers can be sent to Believers Traditional Church by noon Thursday.

The family would also like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Patriot Homecare and Compassus Hospice Services for their compassionate care during Garry’s final moments.

He will forever be remembered for his unwavering love and devotion to his family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home.
