Kathryn Maras 1941-2025
SMYRNA, Ga. — Kathryn Schryver Sauer Maras passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the age of 83, after living many years with Alzheimer’s disease.
Kathie was born June 12, 1941, in Warren, to Raymond and Louise Guarnieri Schryver.
She lived in Warren most of her life before moving to Smyrna for the last nine years in the loving care of her daughter, Marie Lambremont, and her family.
Kathie enjoyed her high school years at St. Mary’s Academy in South Bend, Indiana. She was a lifelong Notre Dame fan and enjoyed many trips back to Notre Dame for football games and to visit her daughter Rena at St. Mary’s College. After high school, Kathie went to Washington, D.C., to attend Trinity College. She finished her college years at Youngstown State University when she returned home to help her father, Raymond, campaign for mayor of Warren.
Kathie was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Atlanta, and a previous member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Cortland and Blessed Sacrament Parish in Warren.
Kathie was a longtime teacher in Catholic schools in Warren, spending over 25 years at St. Mary Middle School. She retired from St. Mary Middle School in 2004 to go to California to support her daughter, Jennifer, and her family as her granddaughter, Remy, battled cancer. Kathie loved being a teacher and loved her students. She really enjoyed running into them as adults and hearing about their lives. Many of her former students reached out to her children to share what an impact Kathie had on their lives.
Kathie’s greatest joys were her children, her friends and the beach. She loved Lake Erie and spent entire summers there for many years until she gave this up so her children could play sports in the summer. Kathie replaced Lake Erie beaches with Florida and North Carolina beaches, never missing a chance to spend spring break at the beach.
Kathie was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry (Pete) Sauer; and her second husband, Donald “Ducky” Maras; by grandchildren, Remy Bamieh and Tyler Tomassi; and by her brothers, Raymond and David, and David’s wife, Marie. Kathie was proud of having introduced David to her Trinity classmate, Marie.
She is survived by her children, Marie (Jack) Lambremont, Rena Sauer (Will Davis), Jennifer (Ron) Bamieh and Jim (Michelle) Sauer; and Ducky’s children, Wendy (John) Kline, Bamby (Ben) Tomassi, Britt Maras and Jennifer Maras. Kathie is also survived by her grandchildren, Kathryn and John Lambremont, Gabrielle, Kenley and Maxwell Davis, Ryanne, Samuel and Henry Bamieh, Lauren, Hannah and Jacob Sauer, Elly Maras, Brittani (Gregory) Latessa and Alissa (Andrew) Hallenbeck. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends across the country.
A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Cortland. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church.
