Richard J. Flemming 1936-2025

VERNON — Richard “Dick” J. Flemming, 88, passed away Monday, April 8, 2025, at the Hospice of the Valley in Youngstown.

Born Nov. 28, 1936, in Warren, he was a son of the late Williams R. and Mary Parlas Flemming. On June 22, 1957, he married Phyllis J. Bowman and at the time of her passing in 2018, they had shared 61 years of marriage.

Dick attended Kinsman Presbyterian Church and owned and operated Flemming Construction for 25 years. A true aviation enthusiast, Dick had his own airstrip and loved flying his two-seater American Champion Citabria Plane. He often took to the skies, flying to his cabin in Emlenton, Pa., and to meet friends for breakfast.

In addition to his love for flying, Dick had a deep appreciation for tinkering with his Model T and Model A cars. His hands were never idle, as he also enjoyed wood crafting, creating beautiful pieces that reflected his creativity and skill.

Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia L. (William Taylor) Hunkus of Memphis, Tennessee; his son, Richard E. “Rick” (Debbie) Flemming of Kinsman; six grandchildren, Victoria, Christian and Griffin Hunkus, Joseph and Ryan Flemming, and Shannon Battaglia; two great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Magnolia Hunkus.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Flemming; sister, Betty Lacella and brother, William Flemming.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St., Kinsman, OH 44428, with Pastor Susan Francis officiating.

Private burial will take place at Kinsman Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Baumgardner Funeral Home.
