Victor G. Shaffer 1937-2024

CORTLAND — Victor “Vic” Glen Shaffer, 87, also known as “Jed” to his family, went to be with our Lord and was reunited with the love of his life, Norma Sollinger Shaffer, at 9:06 a.m. Saturday, Oct.12, 2024, at Ohio Living Lake Vista in Cortland.

Victor was born Feb. 3, 1937, at home on Pifer Mountain in Tucker County, W.Va., to Edison and Goldia Jones Shaffer.

Victor attended Newton Falls Schools in Newton Falls.

Victor enlisted in the United States Army at 17 years old and proudly served his country. He was a tank gunner stationed at Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Victor married the love of his life, Norma Sollinger Shaffer, on June 15, 1963; and they shared 57 years of marriage, before his wife’s death on Sept. 27, 2020. Together they share two daughters, Rhonda Lynn Shaffer of Champion and Kara Lee Shaffer Bailey of Newton Falls.

Victor retired after 28 years from General Motors in Lordstown. He was always very proud to say he was able to retire at 57 years old.

Victor enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, riding his motorcycle, camping and telling some of the best stories anyone ever heard. He enjoyed hunting both with archery arrows and with a gun, in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, alongside his son, Gary Shaffer, and grandson, Kevin Yarger; son-in-law, Jeff Yarger and his buddy, Ron Deak. He also enjoyed many years hunting with his uncle, Walter Jones, whom he thought of and loved like a brother; and many cousins in West Virginia.

Victor will also be sadly missed by his sisters, Judith (Jerald) Armstrong of Cortland, Rhonda Shaffer of Champion and Kara Bailey of Newton Falls; grandchildren, Gary Shaffer, Kayla Yarger, Kevin (Jamie) Yarger, Kyle Bailey, and Ashlyn Bailey and fiance, Bannon Elston; four great-grandchildren, Logan Yarger, Lincoln Yarger, Izzy Yarger and soon-to-be-born, Makenzi Elston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Norma Shaffer.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Ohio Living Lake Vista in Cortland, particularly “Bri” who was a caregiver and special friend to our father. Also to Hospice, for their love and care both to our father and our family.

Friends and family will be received from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, at Wright Funeral Home and Crematory (on-site), 220 N. Walnut St., Philippi, WV 26416.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Pifer Mountain Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, we ask friends to consider planting a tree in our father’s name.

Donations may be made to Healthy Hearts and Paws, in Warren.
