Doris J. Blackhurst 1949-2024

NEWTON FALLS — Doris J. Blackhurst, 74, passed away peacefully into eternal rest, Sunday, April 28, 2024, at her daughter’s residence in Hudson, Florida.

She was born Nov. 23, 1949, in Dayton, Pa., the daughter of the late Floyd Edward Johns and Ida Mae Gamble Johns. She graduated from Jackson Milton High School in the Class of 1969. Doris had lived in Newton Falls for three years, formerly of Deerfield for many years.

She married the love of her life, William A. Blackhurst, on March 6, 1981, and they enjoyed 28 years of marriage together until he passed away, June 9, 2009.

Doris worked as an assistant supervisor at B & R Johnson in Akron for 10 years, and Delta in Middlefield for two years. She loved watching TV, listening to music, very loud, and watching football and baseball, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; two sisters, Dorothy Smith and Carol Earl; one brother, Earl Johns; and most recently her boyfriend of many years, Jack Boatner.

She is survived by: one daughter, Tonya Friend of Hudson, Florida; two sons, Jeff (Jennifer) Friend of Youngstown and Jared Friend of Sabina; one brother, Floyd (Tina) Johns of New Concord; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2024, at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Calling hours will be one hour prior, at the funeral home, 10 to 11 a.m. Doris will be laid to rest in Vaughn Cemetery in Lake Milton.
