Anthony M. Marzo

NILES – Anthony M. “Tony” Marzo, 93, of Shepherd of the Valley, formerly of Girard, passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 29, 2014, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren after a long and fulfilling life.

Anthony was born Oct. 19, 1921, in Youngstown, a son of the late Anthony and Philomena Gavazzo Marzo, and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a 1939 graduate of the Rayen School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Africa and Italy with the 1108th Engineer Combat Group, 235th Battalion. Tony then attended The Ohio State University after returning from the war.

Mr. Marzo was a bricklayer for more than 40 years, working with Bricklayers Locals 43 and 8, retiring in 1984.

Anthony was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns, and enjoyed gardening, bowling, fishing and golfing. In his younger days, he played amateur golf in the YAC Golf League, and more recently he golfed and bowled with the Girard Senior Citizens.

While at Shepherd of the Valley, he took up painting and was awarded fourth place for his art in Columbus in the senior citizen category. He also tended the garden at Shepherd of the Valley, made pizzas to sell at the annual craft shows, and he was president of the residents’ council.

Mr. Marzo leaves his daughter, Nancy (Bruce) Constantine of Lake Milton; his son, Michael (Carmel) Marzo of Niles; four grandchildren, Christopher (Jessica) Constantine, Danielle Constantine, Jeffrey Constantine, and Jeremy (Valerie) Rodgers; six great-grandchildren, Cameron, Gabriel, Tanner, Oscar, Lacie and Mia; a sister, Florence Bevilacqua of Youngstown; a sister-in-law, Lois (Joe) Costarella of Girard; and several nieces and nephews.

His wife, Marie Lillian Marsico, whom he married April 14, 1951, passed away Sept. 3, 2007. Three brothers, Nicholas Bernard, Sam Marzo and Frank Marzo; and two sisters, Mary Yane and Liz Fasanelli, also are deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Kinnick Funeral Home, McClurkin Memorial Chapel, 222 S. State St., in Girard. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and will continue at 11 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St., in Girard.

Interment with military honors will follow at Girard City Cemetery.

Anthony’s family thanks the staff and management of Shepherd of the Valley Assisted Living, especially special friends, Sue and Norma, for the kindness shown and care given to Anthony during his stay there.

Mr. Marzo’s family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Shepherd’s Foundation, 5525 Silica Road, Austintown, OH 44515, and earmarked for the Shepherd of the Valley in Niles.
