Three plan to seek judge position NILES — The director of the Trumbull County Department of Job and Family Services is taking an unpaid leave of absence while he campaigns for the Democratic nomination for Niles municipal judge. Attorney John Gargano said he is leaving his job in the hands of a few “capable administrators” in the JFS office. Township organizing quake preparedness

WEATHERSFIELD — Because of underground mines that dot Mineral Ridge, an earthquake of any magnitude could be particularly devastating, township Trustee Marvin McBride said. The trustees held a special meeting Feb. 15 and invited representatives from the surrounding communities, the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District and the county to ensure there is a collaborative plan in place in case a nearby injection well is allowed to reopen and the area once again experiences earthquakes. Line break causes damage at plant

NILES — A water main break that went unnoticed for several days caused damage at the construction site of the waste water treatment plant, which is being upgraded, according to city officials. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but at least one concrete pad that held a transformer will have to be rebuilt and the soil in the area sunk about six inches, water and sewer Superintendent Andy Catanzarite said.
