SCOPE hosts hearing screenings
NILES -- The Niles Senior SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St., will offer free hearing screenings noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday.
The program is sponsored by the Centers for Hearing Care, and the doctor will be Susan Herr, an audiologist.
There is no fee, but an appointment must be made.
The center will host a book discussion group the first Thursday of the month. The book for March is "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doer and is available at the McKinley Memorial Library.
The group, led by Carrie Kibby of the local library, will meet 2 p.m. March 2. The program is free, and anyone can participate.
Podiatry services are offered every nine weeks. The next clinic is 9 a.m. to noon March 20 by appointment with Thomas Prokabla.
All participants must bring their insurance cards as regular copays apply.
The center also is taking appointments for mammograms with the Mercy Health Mammovan 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 21.
Each appointment is 15 minutes, and insurance will be accepted. Those without insurance will be eligible for a free mammogram.

Council ratifies fire contract
NILES -- A new contract for Niles firefighters was ratified Friday by City Council in a special meeting.
The contract comes more than two years after negotiations for a new contract started.
Council also accepted a fact finder's report on negotiations for a new police contract.
Copies of the contract and the report weren't immediately available, but fire Lt. Bill Santell said the firefighters will not be getting any raises under the new deal.
Ash Wednesday service planned
NILES -- Niles First Presbyterian Church, 4 Summit St., will hold an Ash Wednesday communion Lenten service 7 p.m. March 1.
A Family Day soup contest will be held following the 10 a.m. worship service March 5.
Niles police warn of electric scam
NILES -- Police here are warning residents and business owners to be wary of callers who claim to be from Ohio Edison collecting overdue electric bills for the light department.
The callers threaten to turn off electricity if they aren't sent a Western Union or Money Card order for the "payment," according to Niles police.
"The Niles Light Department will not subcontract with anyone or request payment in any other form but to the city itself. If you receive one of these calls, simply hang up," a statement posted to the department's official Facebook page states.
Historical Society seeking members
McDONALD -- The Historical Society of McDonald is sponsoring a membership drive to March 1.
A membership costs $5 for students, $10 for individuals, $50 for patrons and $100 for businesses.
The society is a nonprofit organization with the purpose of collecting and preserving historical artifacts of McDonald Village.
President David Martin leads the monthly meetings at the Community Center. The group has a curator who works with the Arms Family Museum in Youngstown to learn techniques that ensure artifacts are preserved properly.
Membership money should be sent to Historical Society of McDonald, P.O. Box 411, McDonald, OH 44437. Checks should be addressed to the Historical Society of McDonald.

Niles enrolling for kindergarten
NILES -- Kindergarten registration for Niles City School District students and eligible open enrollment students will be held only by appointment Tuesday and March 2, 3, 6, 7 and 9 at the Niles Board of Education offices, 309 N. Rhodes Ave.
Open enrollment applications will be accepted March 1 to April 13.
Call the school administration building between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at 330-989-5095 to schedule an appointment.
Screening appointments will be confirmed upon completion of registration.
Luck of the Irish set for March 18
NILES -- St. Stephen Parish will hold its annual Luck of the Irish fundraiser 5:30 p.m. March 18 at Ciminero's Banquet Centre, 123 N. Main St., Niles.
The fundraiser will include a buffet-style dinner, desserts and an open bar.
There will be more than $7,000 worth of cash prizes, a lottery tree and a gift basket auction.
Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling the parish office at 330-652-4396.
