WCMA sets up next season
Hits from the ’60s and ’70s, a Broadway veteran and Irish stepdancers will be part of the Warren Civic Music Association’s 2026-27 season.
Organizers announced the new season Thursday at Packard Music Hall during the final concert of the 2025-26 season.
Dale Janus and Mary Ellen Vencel, co-chairs of the talent committee, both said they try to offer subscribers a variety of entertainment.
“While tributes are one thing, if we can get some originals — like we had Lovin’ Spoonful this season — we feel that’s a little better than a tribute,” Janus said. “We just keep mixing it up. We always try to get something a little country, a little classic, a little different, as well as plenty of classic rock.”
The season will open Sept. 10 with A Little Bit Diamond, a Neil Diamond tribute that transports audiences back to his 1972 concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, which was recorded for his “Hot August Night” live album.
It will be followed by another show rooted in the 1970s that’s not the originals, but it’s led by two performers who share their bloodline. Seals and Crofts 2 on Oct. 13 features Brady Seals, a cousin of Dan Seals, and Lua Crofts, the daughter of Dash Crofts (who died earlier this year), performing such hits as “Summer Breeze,” “Diamond Girl” and “We May Never Pass This Way Again.”
Taylor Simon King: Celebration 3 American Troubadours on Nov. 11 is an act that draws from the extensive catalogs of James Taylor, Carly Simon and Carole King for its performances.
Michael Cavanaugh, a Cleveland native who earned a Tony nomination for his work in the Billy Joel musical “Movin’ Out” on Broadway, brings his Christmas show to Packard on Dec. 9. Backed by a trio, Cavanaugh will play seasonal classics and rock-infused favorites.
WCMA normally avoids the first three months of the year because of northeast Ohio’s unpredictable weather, but organizers made an exception for The StepCrew, a group of dancers and musicians whose performances include Irish stepdancings as well as tap and Ottawa Valley, a high-energy, percussive Canadian dance style. The group performs March 4, 2027.
“We looked at them last year, and we couldn’t get them,” Janus said. “They were on our radar. Then when they came up this year and we could get them in around March and St. Patrick’s Day, we said, ‘Man, let’s do it.'”
The season closes April 11, 2027, with The Buckinghams. The group, which includes two original members, had six top 40 hits, including “Kind of a Drag,” “Don’t You Care” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.”
“I was a big fan of theirs,” Vencel said. “I actually saw them when I was in junior high school. They played at my brother’s college.”
And just as Thursday’s concert incorporated many local singers and musicians, horn players from the W.D. Packard Concert Band will be part of the Buckinghams’ concert, Janus said. And the StepCrew may feature students from a local dance school in its performance.
“We’re trying to get the community involved,” he said. “That makes it nice.”
Season tickets brochures will be mailed out to current subscribers, and brochures will be available
at Packard Music Hall and other locations throughout the region. Brochures also can be printed out at warrencivicmusic.com.
Tickets also are available online through Ticketmaster, Janus said, but subscribers can avoid service and credit card fees by mailing in the subscription form and paying by check.
WCMA started in 1940, and it has called Packard Music Hall home since the venue opened in 1955. Despite that long legacy, Vencel still encounters people who aren’t familiar with the organization.
Her pitch to those folks is, “The price is amazing, and you’re getting such good quality entertainment. You’re getting six shows for less than $25 (each), and it’s right in your hometown. How can you beat that?”
