Police search for man targeting car wash vacuums

Liberty and Boardman businesses report damage

LIBERTY — Police in a pair of Mahoning Valley communities are looking for a suspect who reportedly damaged thousands of dollars in car wash vacuums last week.

According to a police report, an officer was dispatched to the Belmont Avenue Modwash for a criminal damage report, with dispatchers noting the damage happened between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Friday.

The officer spoke with the business manager, who said an unknown man was seen on camera emptying their vacuum canisters, adding that it has been an ongoing issue and a vehicle brought the person to the premises.

The report states damage was caused to the vacuum’s canisters after they were improperly reinstalled, with the manager telling the officer that each canister costs approximately $600 to replace.

Fifteen were reportedly damaged, with each valued at $650, creating a total of $9,750 in damage, the report later states.

The manager said no one is permitted on the property after business hours, adding that he plans to speak with his district manager about getting no trespassing signs. The report notes that extra patrols also were requested during the overnight and evening hours, and the manager mentioned the same suspect went to a Boardman Modwash location and was involved in similar activity.

According to a Boardman report, officers were called to the Boardman Poland Road Modwash Saturday morning, with the location’s manager reporting someone had tampered with their vacuum machines the night before, between 10:20 and 11:15 p.m.

Five vacuums were reportedly damaged or destroyed at the location, costing $500 apiece, causing the damage in a similar manner reported to Liberty officers.

The report states the suspect was described as a 5-foot-5 white man believed to be in his 30s or 40s, wearing a bright yellow hat and a construction jacket.

While taking the report, the officer received a call from Liberty, where the same suspect was seen getting into a 2014-15 grey Dodge Durango with unknown registration.

Liberty police posted a lookout request to Facebook on Wednesday with an image of the man, with Detective Jeff Palmer’s phone number and email address, 234-228-7886 and jpalmer@libertytwp.com, listed as a contact point.

Starting at $3.23/week.
