Warren opens grant program
Accepting applications from groups that aid city residents
WARREN — Organizations serving low- to moderate-income residents of Warren can now apply for funding through the city’s 2027 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
The program supports neighborhood revitalization, affordable housing, economic opportunities and community services for Warren residents.
The application deadline is 3 p.m. July 24. A full timeline is included in the application guidelines packet on the city’s website.
The city typically sets aside approximately $144,000 for subrecipient funding to nonprofits providing direct services within Warren city limits. The exact amount depends on the final allocation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Last year’s total CDBG funds were $1,146,337.
“Whether that be after-school programs geared toward children or delivering meals to seniors, the funding has to be used within the city of Warren for Warren residents,” said Victoria Wolf, accountant and acting program coordinator for the city’s Community Development department.
A Citizens Advisory Committee composed of three council members and their appointees, plus six mayoral appointees, reviews applications, interviews candidates and decides which projects to fund and in what amounts. The city office does not make the funding decisions.
Eligible applicants include local government offices, nonprofit organizations with valid 501(c)(3) status, or entities with a fiscal agent agreement with a qualified local government or nonprofit.
There is no fixed maximum or minimum request amount; the advisory committee determines awards after reviewing proposals and conducting interviews.
Award decisions are expected no later than Sept. 17, following a committee meeting scheduled for Sept. 16 (with a possible second day Sept. 17).
Wolf will notify all applicants of the outcome.
For those interested, there will be workshops to help first-timers with paperwork May 5 and 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the conference room on the third floor of the Gibson Building, 258 E. Market Street, Suite 305. Sessions are available upon request.
Applications are available digitally on the city’s website. Groups must serve Warren city residents, demonstrate financial responsibility and be current on all taxes.
All funding remains contingent on the final HUD allocation for the 2027 program year.
