Vienna trustee gives updates on fiscal emergency

VIENNA — Some of the township’s funds could be in a better place in the next three years.

As their regular meeting concluded on Tuesday, trustee Mike Haddle provided residents with a draft of the township’s updated projections, saying that while a few things needed to be adjusted, their three main funds — fire, police and road and bridge — were starting to get out of the red.

“Because this is a draft, we can talk about — (fire) Chief (Gus) Birch, in one of these, we have an ambulance penciled in here for 2027,” Haddle said. “If we move that to a later date, we can be ahead on the fire fund in 2027.”

Regarding the general fund, Haddle said the township has some high insurance costs. Trustees are working on adjusting them, which will help out, he added.

Haddle reiterated that the projections are still just a draft, but they look to have them approved at an April regular meeting.

Haddle said everything is still up in the air because of property tax discussions throughout the state, adding that he doesn’t want the plan to change again, but it probably will next year.

“The problem with it changing is, here soon the state is going to start billing us for the fiscal recovery board,” Haddle said.

Fiscal Officer Heidi Brown said the township will be charged $50 an hour, but it will keep going up by an unnamed amount every six months.

Starting at $3.23/week.
