Cortland names new council member
CORTLAND — City council has appointed Jon Kris Vadas to fill the vacant council seat created earlier this year.
The vacancy occurred following a series of leadership changes in the city, including the February recall of former Mayor Deidre Petrosky and council’s subsequent decision to appoint then-councilman Jim Bradley to serve out the remainder of the mayoral term. Bradley’s elevation left his council seat open.
Under the city charter, council had to appoint a qualified Cortland resident to serve in the position until the next election. Eight residents — seven men and one woman — submitted resumes for consideration for the seat.
The appointment restores council to its full membership as the city continues addressing routine municipal business and several ongoing projects, including road paving and planning for a new fire station facility.
