Youngstown man out on bail after gunshots in Liberty

LIBERTY — A concerned call from a neighbor resulted in a Youngstown man getting arrested on gun charges Saturday afternoon.

Calvin Taylor, 49, pleaded not guilty Monday in Girard Municipal Court to a charge of using a weapon while intoxicated. No plea was entered for a felony charge of having weapons under disability.

According to a police report, officers were called to a Colonial Drive residence for reports of shots being fired, with the caller telling dispatchers that a man was firing shots into the woods.

The officer attempted to listen for more gunfire, but could not hear anything as they waited for responding units.

The report states the officer spoke with the caller, a woman, who said she and her granddaughter were upstairs getting ready to leave when she heard a gunshot, ran into her daughter’s room and heard two more.

The woman looked out a bedroom window and said she saw Taylor standing outside next to a side door with a gun in his hand, according to the report.

A woman answered the door when officers went to the nearby residence and asked for Taylor; she then went to his door and asked him to come upstairs.

The report states the officer heard Taylor’s voice and a distinct laugh, as well as what sounded like a live round racking through the slide of a firearm, the report states.

Officers eventually made contact with Taylor, who made his way up and asked who they were despite being in full police uniform and officers observed a tan firearm in his left hand, which was confiscated immediately.

The reporting officer noted that Taylor appeared intoxicated, exhibiting glossy eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcohol. Inside the firearm, police found one live round in the chamber and three in the magazine, the report states.

During questioning, Taylor initially denied firing the weapon but later admitted to discharging the gun twice in the backyard, according to the report.

Officers took Taylor to the Trumbull County jail on his charges, but he was released on bail following his arrest, according to jail records. He’s set to appear back in court Feb. 18, court records show.
