Warren woman ordered to pay $280,375 in restitution in OVI crash

WARREN — Brittani Scott, 37, of Maple Street in Warren, was sentenced to five years of probation Wednesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court in a May 8, 2024, crash with a motorcyclist on Tod Avenue Southwest that left the motorcyclist with head injuries. She was ordered to pay $280,375 in restitution to the victim.

Scott pleaded guilty in October to aggravated vehicular assault, a fourth-degree felony, and misdemeanor operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the crash.

According to Warren police, Scott made an improper U-turn on Tod Avenue SW, causing the now-39-year-old Warren motorcyclist to crash into her vehicle.

Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Sean O’Brien sentenced Scott to 180 days in the Trumbull County Jail on her OVI conviction with 170 days suspended.

She began serving her 10-day sentence Wednesday. She was also ordered to pay a $375 fine. Her driver’s license was suspended for two years.

She was ordered to pay restitution of $280,375 as a result of the costs incurred by the victim, according to court officials.

She is ordered to pay $100 per month.

She also was referred to the Trumbull County Day Reporting Center and to complete the Victim Awareness course and verify all prescriptions with the Trumbull County Probation Department, according to court officials.

She is also ordered to obtain and keep employment and comply with all treatment recommended by Compass Family and Community Services.

A crash report shows that the crash took place near Maple Street. Scott was heading north on Tod Avenue in the curb lane of the four-lane road when she “decided to make a U-turn from that lane,” the report states.

“As she was making (the) U-turn, she caused (the motorcyclist) to crash into her driver’s side of her vehicle,” it states.

The crash caused major damage to both vehicles. The motorcyclist was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, and Scott was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

A diagram with the crash report shows that the motorcyclist was in the passing lane to the left of Scott’s vehicle. He was traveling the same direction as Scott when Scott decided to make a left U-turn. The diagram shows that the motorcyclist was nearly even with or slightly in front of Scott’s car when Scott tried to make the left U-turn.

The motorcyclist’s injuries were reported as “suspected serious,” and Scott’s injuries were reported as “suspected minor.”

The crash report does not indicate the level of Scott’s intoxication, but it indicated that Scott was suspected of having used marijuana.

The crash happened at 12:58 p.m. A blood test was done to evaluate Scott for alcohol and drugs, the report states.

Starting at $3.23/week.
