State soccer program honors Lakeview girl

CORTLAND — Lakeview middle schooler Emelia Gedra, 12, has been named the TOPSoccer Buddy in Ohio for 2025. The sixth grader was honored out of dozens of students across the state who volunteer for TOPSoccer.

Emelia said she’s been playing soccer since she was 4.

“I love it,” Emelia said. “It’s so fun, and it’s great exercise.”

The Outreach Program for Soccer (TOPSoccer) is a program run by U.S. Youth Soccer in Ohio. It’s an adaptive soccer program for athletes with special needs. Locally, Emelia was one of 17 buddies who worked with nearly 70 athletes during the most recent season. Programs are in place all across the state, with offerings in Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo.

Emelia works one-on-one or in small groups to help athletes understand drills, stay engaged, and most importantly, enjoy the game.

“I show them how to get the ball going where they need to go, how to use their feet. I work with them one on one if they need help,” she said.

Amelia has volunteered with the Mahoning Valley program for about four years, beginning when she was still in elementary school. According to program organizers, her commitment has never wavered. She attends practices weekly, enjoys interacting with athletes of varying abilities, and steps in wherever she is needed, said Cathie Licht. Licht, along with her husband Bill, oversee the Mahoning Valley program.

Licht said Amelia stands out not only for her consistency, but for her willingness to meet any challenge that might arise. On several occasions, Licht said, Emelia filled in leadership roles when other volunteers or coaches were unavailable, ready to organize drills and help athletes as needed.

“She just jumps right in,” Licht said. “Nothing phases her. For her age, that’s remarkable.”

Unlike many TOPSoccer buddies, Amelia does not have a family member enrolled in the program. She volunteers solely out of a love for soccer and a desire to help others experience it.

Licht said Emelia often works closely with individual athletes, staying by their side for an entire practice or game to ensure they feel supported and confident.

“She meets the kids where they are,” Licht said. “She plays with them, teaches them and makes sure they feel included.”

Outside of TOPSoccer, Emelia maintains a full schedule. She is part of the band and writing club at school, and recently decided to add chess club to her routine — all while maintaining a perfect grade average.

“We’re just so proud of everything she’s done, and so honored she was recognized,” said mom Sevasti Gedra.

For Licht and other program leaders, Emelia represents the heart of TopSoccer’s mission.

“She’s just a wonderful young lady,” Licht said. “We’re incredibly grateful for everything she brings to the program.”
