Reading program at Howland Intermediate engages students

HOWLAND — Members of the Howland Board of Education heard from one of the school’s principals about a program through the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library now in its fourth year and the benefits it provides to students.

Howland Intermediate Principal Stephen Kovach said at Monday’s regular meeting that students go on a yearly field trip to the library as part of their “Take 2” program.

“They actually partner with the Friends of the Howland Library, and they pay for busing for us to travel up to the library,” Kovach said. “And while at the library, the kids go on a tour, they get to learn about the different options that the library has to offer, because a lot of them do not know of things that are available to them.”

Kovach said students can then borrow two books or magazines from the library with their own library cards — hence the program’s title — and the library doesn’t charge late fees.

“I think they’ve (the Warren Public Library) done a really good job — especially the youth educators — have done a good job of explaining other things the library could be used for,” Kovach said. “Besides just coming in and being quiet, they really promote food projects or, if you’re working with a group, come here and sit in this study room — you don’t have to whisper.”

Kovach said the library’s basement is always the highlight of the tour because the kids think it’s really cool and exciting, as it’s somewhere different — despite it being a basement filled with furniture and books.

Kovach said students will be going to the library Feb. 1 to 3 to kick off Read-a-thon, which normally runs for a week in February.

Starting at $3.23/week.
