Delivery of beds to kids rests in volunteers’ hands

WARREN — With this the busiest time of year for delivering beds to area children, Sleep in Heavenly Peace conducted a recent bed delivery day for the holiday season with volunteers from churches, community organizations and schools helping with the deliveries.

More than 50 volunteers gathered on a cold weekend morning before the holidays at the Sleep in Heavenly Peace offices in Warren to load into vehicles more than 24 beds and take them to the homes of local children.

Kaila Mohney, bed delivery coordinator, said the end-of-the-year delivery is always the busiest.

“This is our big holiday bed delivery,” Mohney said. “We are excited for all the volunteers who are helping us. We are delivering 24 beds and probably a few more.”

Chelsea Munroe, chapter president for the local Sleep in Heavenly Peace, said volunteers include the Lakeview High School boys basketball team, members of Howland United Methodist Church and Warren Junior Women’s League Juniorettes.

She said beds were built prior to the delivery at different locations, including churches and other organizations.

Cheryl Cranston of Howland, with the Howland United Methodist Church, said she was encouraged by other church members to be a volunteer.

“When you see the faces on the children when they get a bed, it means so much. That is why I help,” she said.

Sara Allen of Howland, also with Howland United Methodist Church, said: “I like kids and want to help them.”

Allen and others from the church placed parts of the beds into the backs of trucks and other vehicles.

“Our church has held bed build days where people come together to build beds,” Allen said.

She said Mohney was the one who got her interested in being a volunteer for the organizations.

Munroe said this is the fifth year for the holiday delivery,

“I think it is good for the volunteers to meet the families in our community who need their help. This is the time of the year when people need our help. The children will receive a new bed. That is great Christmas present for them,” Munroe said.

She said the volunteers make the work of Sleep in Heavenly Peace successful.

“We could not do what we do if it wasn’t for our volunteers.”

Munroe said the beds are delivered for the holidays and include a mattress, a pillow and bedding.

The premise of Sleep in Heavenly Peace is that no child sleeps on the floor in our town.

Amy Sutton of Gustavus said she stepped up to help after hearing all that Sleep in Heavenly Peace does.

“It seemed like a worthy cause. I have done this before. Everyone here does an amazing job making a difference for the lives of the children,” Sutton said.

She said when all the vehicles are filled with the beds, people are assigned to be part of different delivery groups.

“It looks like a caravan when they all leave from the parking lot,” Sutton said.

Mohney said despite it being a cold day, people of all ages stepped up.

Adriana Mancino, 11, of Niles, who is Miss Northern International, said she has helped Sleep in Heavenly Peace for the past two years.

“It is part of my community service and connecting with others through kindness,” she said.

Isabella Whistler, 14, of Cortland, helped her load parts of beds into the backs of vehicles.

“Even though it is cold outside, I remember what I am doing is making the life of a local child better. They are getting a bed to sleep on,” Whistler said, noting many children have to sleep on floors.

The nonprofit organization is funded solely by donations and run by the volunteers.

Beds made are twin sized and constructed with raw wood.

The Lakeview Outreach and Fellowship held a community Christmas concert in December and donated all of its proceeds to Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Starting at $3.23/week.
