Black History Month events
February is Black History Month, and events and programs are being scheduled throughout the Mahoning Valley.
• Tuesday — Artist Davon Brantley will present a lecture 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Youngstown State University’s McDonough Museum of Art, followed by an opening reception 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, Bliss Hall. An exhibition of Brantley’s work will be on display throughout February at the gallery.
• Friday — A free concert will celebrate organ music by African-American composers with organist Ralph Holtzhauser performing at 7 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE, Warren. The program will highlight the artistry and influence of African-American composers who have shaped the American sacred and concert music traditions.
• Saturday — The African Marketplace will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at McKay Auditorium, Beeghly Hall, Youngstown State University. The marketplace will feature vendors, cultural displays and traditional foods celebrating African heritage.
• Feb. 8 — A program on Braceville’s Underground Railroad will be at 2 p.m. at Braceville Township Hall, 582 Newton Falls Bailey Road.
• Feb. 12 — Dr. Lindsey Stewart will discuss her book “The Conjuring of American Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic” at 2 p.m. The talk will be streamed live at the McKinley Memorial Library in Niles in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium. • Feb. 19 — African American Genealogy class at 3 p.m. at Howland Library Branch, 9095 East Market St. Participants will learn to trace their family history using traditional and digitized resources, including the Freedmen’s Bureau, the African American Heritage database, and the Unknown No Longer website. The class also will include a brief overview of genealogy basics. Registration is required.
• Feb. 21 — A documentary screening and discussion on “The Lives of Toni Morrison” will be at 3:30 p.m. at McKay Auditorium, Beeghly Hall, Youngstown State University. The screening will be followed by a discussion exploring the life and legacy of author Toni Morrison.
• Feb. 24 — Family Hour: Black Children’s Book Week will be at 6 p.m. at the Warren- Trumbull County Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW. Families with children ages 3 and up can celebrate with different stations featuring crafts, activities and games inspired by African American children’s book authors and illustrators. Registration is required.
• Feb. 27 — Black History Month themed movie will be shown at 1 p.m. at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW.
• Feb. 28 — The Trumbull County African Americans Achievers Association Hall of Fame banquet will be at 4 p.m. at DiVieste’s Banquet Center, 754 N. River Road, Warren. Cost $50. Guest speaker will be the Rev Todd Johnson.
