Wrong-way vehicle causes OSHP trooper to crash on I-680
AUSTINTOWN — The Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post is investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a marked patrol car that occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday on Interstate 680 at the Meridian Road exit ramp in Austintown.
A trooper was driving northbound on I-680 and was approaching the exit ramp to Meridian Road when a 16-year-old driver from Niles, driving a 2019 Subaru WRX, entered I-680 northbound headed south. A report from the patrol states the teen driver used the exit ramp as an entrance ramp and the trooper swerved to avoid striking the vehicle.
The trooper drove off the right side of the road, down an embankment and struck a ditch before coming to rest in the grassy gore. No contact was made with the Subaru and it remained on scene, the patrol report states.
The trooper was transported to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital as precaution. The juvenile driver was not injured. Contact with the driver’s guardians had not yet been made as of Monday, the release states.
