Howland fire chief promotes CPR trainings

HOWLAND — One of the trainings offered by the fire department has been up and running — and their chief wants to remind the public about it.

Fire Chief Raymond Pace told officials and residents during his report at a regular board meeting last week that the fire department offers CPR classes to the public and businesses, which are all available on its website.

“We go to a lot of the local businesses and medical facilities and doctors’ offices,” Pace said. “But we do provide CPR classes about once a month at the fire station, so we’ve tried to bring that back since COVID.”

Pace said while it’s been challenging to bring the courses back, he credited Nicholas Graf and fire Captain Ted Luman for making it possible.

“It’s been very positive to see more people being trained in CPR and how to help someone in need,” Pace said.

Pace said the CPR training isn’t just held at the fire department. It is also brought to local businesses, like dentistry and podiatry offices, or the Town & Country Veterinary Hospital on Market Street.

Pace said they do have to charge for training, with the cost varying based on the number of people in the class.

“What we do is, we have so many people that are trained to be a CPR instructor, and then we partner with University Hospitals, who’s our medical command,” Pace said. “They’re our American Heart Association training centers, we have to purchase cards from them to give to the students and books and stuff like that.”

Pace said the fire department offers individual classes monthly.
