Cortland discusses garbage contract, scraps bid package
CORTLAND — The city law director is being asked on how to move forward on the city’s waste contract.
The contract was discussed at length at Monday’s city council meeting. The current contract with Republic Services expired and previous planning meetings discussed acquiring new cards, adding recycling services or making other changes.
Council President Kevin Piros plans to survey residents and see what levels of service they want to see in a new garbage contract and if they would be comfortable paying higher bills in exchange for more services.
Councilman John Pecuri said he wanted the law director to look at the contract and see if it can be extended, noting he wasn’t sure the previous contract had extension language in it. He also said he wanted to see longer bid times to allow new companies more time to go over the contracts in the hopes of getting more proposals.
After discussion, a resolution authorizing the bid package was withdrawn.
In other business, council:
• Unanimously approved a new policy prohibiting nepotism and conflicts of interest in city employment after a third and final reading.
• Gave final approval to funding SCOPE in support of programming and services at the Cortland Senior Center. The $14,086 payment is the city’s share to the $56,000 SCOPE received from the Trumbull County Senior Levy for the center.
• Approved placing a renewal of an existing 1.9-mill levy on the upcoming election ballot. The levy will appear before voters during the May primary election and generates $260,000 for the city. The levy costs taxpayers about $41 for each $100,000 of property valuation. Voters were last asked to decide on the levy in 2016.
• Approved temporary funding for 2026; the city will hold budget hearings in the first quarter of next year to set a full annual budget.
