VIENNA — The township’s new fiscal officer might already be in place, but officials are still getting a sense of where they stand with fees and penalties from their previous fiscal officer.

At last week’s regular meeting, Fiscal Officer Heidi Brown said she had “no idea” what the township owed in fees to the IRS, noting that Jason Miner, their former fiscal officer who resigned Nov. 1, hadn’t made a payment to them since April. She said she knew what the old fees looked like, but not the new ones.

“I had to create a new PIN from the IRS, and I haven’t got it in the mail yet,” Brown said. “We haven’t made a payment to the IRS since April. We have not paid the State of Ohio withholding since April.”

Brown said the township has no plans to pay the fees, confirming that officials plan on handing them over to the county prosecutor.

Brown said Tuesday that Miner has accumulated $3,200 in fees thus far by not paying. She said officials will have to wait for the IRS to determine how much interest was accumulated from the other missed payments.

Trustee Mike Haddle said once property taxes come in, officials will start reevaluating, as there’s two different payments.

“You know the total amount right now is roughly $160,000; it’s under two different invoices, so there’s a big one and a small one and we’re possibly getting the small one paid out in the spring,” Haddle said. “And then at a certain point, we can, depending on where we’re sitting, we still have the fire fund that’s gonna need some money adjusted into it.”

Brown said aside from the IRS payments, “everything” was late, and the township nearly lost its utilities.

“The electric had shut off, gas had shut off, water had shut off; I had to get those paid right away,” Brown said. “We weren’t gonna have streetlights or gas.”

Haddle said Miner “clocked out” in June, after he and Trustee Phil Pegg had a fight

“He seriously stopped. Everything in that office is from July on,” Brown said.

Miner did not return a request for comment as of publication time.
