Newcomers filling school board, trustee and council seats
Newcomers will be replacing incumbents on a few boards of education in Trumbull County.
New faces will be on the Girard, Newton Falls and Trumbull County Educational Service Center boards.
In Newton Falls, newcomers Rachael Rankin and Jae Leeworthy will join incumbent Tonya Kline to fill three seats on the board.
Complete and unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections had Leeworthy receiving 30% of the vote, Rankin with 27% and Kline with 25%.
Incumbents Amie Crowder received 10% and Daniel Williams received 8%.
In Girard, two newcomers will receive two seats on the board. Scott Strain received 39% and Zak Steiner received 38%. Incumbent Sue Ellen Harris Davis received 23%. Board member Joseph Datchuk chose not to seek re-election.
For the Trumbull County Educational Service Center governing board, two incumbents will return and a political newcomer will replace a third incumbent to fill three seats. Five candidates sought seats on the board.
Unofficial results had incumbents Thomas Krispinsky receiving 25.3% and Laura Rubesich with 25.2%, and new member Carol Young with 25.1%.
Also running were incumbent Al Haberstroh, who received 14% and newcomer Milajean Harkabus with 10%.
TRUSTEE POSITIONS
New faces also will be on some township trustee boards after defeating some incumbents.
In Hartford, incumbent Rebecca Whitman will be joined by Melissa Pucak. Complete but unofficial results had Whitman receiving 38% of the votes and Pucak 33%. Incumbent William Burns received 29% and will leave the board Dec. 31.
In Kinsman, incumbent Jamin Banning likely will be joined by newcomer Loren Hopkins.
Unofficial results had Banning receiving 39% of the vote and Hopkins receiving 31%. Incumbent Bruce Bancroft received 30%.
However, Hopkins is ahead of Bancroft by just seven votes, 218-211. There are only two outstanding absentee ballots in that race. Even if Bancroft received both votes, Hopkins’ lead would still be greater than the automatic recount threshold.
In Mecca, Dan Gladd defeated incumbent Greg Chopko to fill a trustee seat through December 2027. Unofficial results had Gladd receiving 63% of the vote and Chopko receiving 37%.
In Bazetta, incumbent trustee Michael Hovis retained his seat with 35% of the vote and will be joined by newcomer Joel Davis, who formerly served as the township’s information technology specialist. Davis received 27% of the vote and will replace Michael Morelli, who chose not to run for re-election. Davis defeated fellow political newcomers John Barhoover III, with 25%, and Ben Moody with 13%.
In Champion, three write-in candidates sought to fill the remaining two years of Bill Templeton’s term. Templeton died in 2024.
Unofficial election results had Thomas Jeffers receiving 46% of the vote, Dustin Templeton getting 38% and Reginal Rooks Jr. getting 12%
There were 4% of votes not assigned, according to the board of elections.
WEST FARMINGTON
In West Farmington, two incumbents and two newcomers were elected. Incumbents James Mooney and Thomas Mooney retained their seats, with each receiving 21% of the vote. Incumbents Nick Malone and Tim Malone will be replaced by newcomers Clarence Imhoff and Louis Ralston, who each received 18% of the vote. Nick Malone received 11% and Tim Malone garnered 12%, according to complete and unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections.
