New faces to be on Cortland council in 2026

CORTLAND — A current councilman and three new faces will be on Cortland City Council in 2026.

Six candidates were seeking to fill the four seats.

Unofficial and incomplete results in Tuesday’s general election had newcomers Alison McGregor receiving 22% of the vote, Chelsea Munroe 21%, incumbent Kevin Piros 18% and newcomer Chris Wadley 16%.

Also running were Rich McDermott, who received 14% and Donald Petrosky with 8%.

Current council members Kathy Fleischer, Don Moore and Richard McClain chose not to seek re-election.

Before the election, McGregor said she would make sure money is allocated the way it should be, spent wisely and that there is a checks-and-balances system in place. She said she wants to make sure that the police and fire departments get what they need.

Munroe said before the election that one of her goals is to have a better working relationship between council, the mayor and the residents. She said it is important for city officials and council to have trust with the public and improve communication.

Munroe said she wants to see projects that have started move forward.

Piros, who has served on council since January 2010 and has been council president since 2020, said he will focus on revitalizing the downtown by taking an inventory of available property and will work with countywide agencies to try and match city spaces with interested parties.

He said he will research grant incentives to attract new businesses that could increase businesses wanting to expand or relocate to Cortland

Wadley said he supports strong and dedicated safety services to respond to emergencies, noting the police department provides a level of service outside of normal law enforcement that most cities do not have.

Wadley said he will address completing the many projects left uncompleted, including a new fire station, safety city, the downtown civic center / stage and working on finding solutions for flooding concerns along Walnut Creek.

Starting at $3.23/week.
