Falls treasurer resigns for position in Canfield
NEWTON FALLS — The Newton Falls Board of Education at a special meeting Wednesday approved by a 4-1 vote to accept the resignation of treasurer Ben Marko, who has accepted a treasurer position with the Canfield Local School District.
Marko, who has been with the district for two-and-a-half years, will be leaving effective Dec. 31. His contract with Canfield is effective Jan. 1.
Marko will replace Pattie Prince, who is retiring after 39 years with the district. She announced her retirement in June. The board met in executive session on personnel and then returned to the meeting to make the decision.
Board member Tonya Kline cast the “no” vote.
Superintendent Andreas Johansson said a special board meeting will be held soon for the board to discuss plans for getting a replacement for Marko. Johansson said a posting for the treasurer position will be done this week with the Trumbull County Educational Service Center.
Prior to the executive session, the board heard from residents and employees who were among those in attendance.
Dee Howard, an employee in the board offices, said Marko has been an excellent treasurer for the district and has the opportunity to move on with his career.
“He has been very loyal to Newton Falls and its staff and students. He always goes above and beyond. He has had opportunities to go other places,” Howard said.
She asked the board to accept Marko’s resignation so that he can move forward in his career.
Resident Brian Kropp said he understands Marko has the opportunity for a job in another district.
“I respect his option to pursue whatever career path he chooses. The board needs to have a plan in place as we lose a treasurer,” Kropp said.
He said the district has had several treasurers in recent years.
Board President Amie Crowder said she and other board members were made aware of Marko’s on Friday.
“That was the first time I was made aware of his decision to submit his resignation,” she said, noting Marko has done “an outstanding” job as district treasurer.
The board in October approved by a 3-1 vote granting a new contract extension for Marko with a pay increase.
The new fire-year agreement for Marko would have increased his pay from $88,434 to $115,000 effective through July 2030.
