County officials say cyber threat thwarted

WARREN — Officials in Trumbull County say they’ve thwarted an attempted cyberattack on their network from a third-party vendor’s security breach.

Officials said there’s no evidence of data compromise or ongoing unauthorized activity. County Auditor Martha Yoder said in the statement, “My IT Director and Chief Deputy Tim Haniford and his team have worked tirelessly and successfully to prevent damage to our systems and protect our data.”

The county auditor’s office was alerted to the vendor’s breach and promptly contacted Ohio Homeland Security and the Ohio Cyber Integration Center, according to a statement from the office. They were directed to the county’s insurer, the County Risk Sharing Authority, which referred them to GuidePoint Security LLC, a cybersecurity firm.

GuidePoint began its investigation on Nov. 14, using standard response methods and the county’s existing tools to scan for signs of data theft or other threats. The firm confirmed that cybercriminals behind the vendor breach had tried to exploit the county’s systems, but quick intervention by county IT staff and GuidePoint prevented any damage or data loss.

No unauthorized activity has been detected in the network since Nov. 15, the statement said. The county has implemented additional security measures to address the incident and strengthen defenses, with GuidePoint continuing to monitor the systems and IT staff applying new policies and technologies.
