City police respond to shots fired call involving minors

WARREN — A shooting incident involving a group of juveniles and a male suspect unfolded in the 1100 block of Ward Street NW that drew responses from multiple police departments and led to the recovery of multiple firearms.

According to a Warren police report, officers were dispatched to the area of Ward Street and Austin Avenue around 7:10 p.m. Sunday after reports of gunfire.

Officers dispatched to the 200 block of Austin Avenue NW following reports of gunfire were flagged down by the minor victims. The juveniles reported that a shooting had occurred near the 1000 block of Ward Street NW.

The group pointed out a white SUV fleeing westbound on Ward Street, identifying it as the vehicle involved in the incident.

The five juveniles stated they were walking eastbound on Ward Street when they were confronted by a male standing on the front porch of a Ward Street residence.

The male warned them they were getting too close to his white SUV, which was parked in front of the residence and running. One of the juveniles got into a verbal dispute with the male after asking him to repeat his statement. The report then states the juveniles told police that the male produced a firearm, firing a single shot.

One juvenile reported hearing a “whooshing sound” and believed the shot was fired into the air, though it sounded close to the group. The juveniles scattered in different directions before regrouping and flagging down officers.

Multiple agencies, including Warren, Warren Township, Lordstown and Liberty police, the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol, pursued the white SUV.

The report stated that officers established a perimeter, and a K-9 unit conducted a track that led back to the Ward Street residence where the shooting occurred.

With consent from a female resident, the report states officers searched the home but did not locate the suspect. A shotgun and a rifle were removed from the residence for safekeeping, and the resident was provided receipts for both firearms.
