Warren man pleads not guilty to firing weapon during fight

WARREN — A 40-year-old man pleaded not guilty Thursday in Warren Municipal Court to a third-degree felony charge of having weapons under disability, along with two misdemeanor charges of using weapons while intoxicated and discharging a firearm, following an incident where he allegedly fired a gun during a neighborhood dispute.

Wali K. Saunders, of Hazelwood Avenue, appeared before Judge Natasha K. Natale, who issued a no-contact order and set his bond at $50,000, which Saunders posted Friday. He is also required to surrender all firearms to Warren police. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 20.

According to a Warren police report, officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Hazelwood Avenue SE on Thursday, after a neighbor reported a disturbance involving an argument and a gunshot.

The caller stated they observed the suspect point a gun in the air and threaten, “the next shot would be for him,” the report said. Another resident at the same address reported an unknown man yelling about a bookbag in their driveway.

Upon arrival, officers detained a man identified in the report as an unknown individual, who had a bloodied jacket and a bandaged arm, claiming he was on the property to retrieve a bookbag.

A woman at the residence told police she encountered the unknown man yelling about the bookbag when she returned home. She said she retrieved a firearm and fired a round into the ground to scare him off, but he did not leave, according to the report.

However, the woman later admitted to police that her husband, the man now charged, was the one who fired the gun, not her, the report stated.

Officers recovered a spent .45-caliber shell casing next to the residence’s side door and seized a Magnum Research Inc. 1911 .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun. A neighbor confirmed to police that they saw the man with the firearm and witnessed him fire it.

The police report further detailed that a criminal history check revealed the man had a prior felony domestic violence conviction in Mahoning County, prohibiting him from owning or possessing firearms. Officers also seized additional firearms from the residence, including a Smith & Wesson revolver, a rifle and a semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun, which the woman said she purchased for her husband.
