Liberty trustee jailed without bail

NILES — Devon Stanley’s stay in jail looks to be longer, as a judge ordered him to be held without bail.

Stanley, a Liberty trustee, Girard Municipal Court prosecutor and the county’s deputy clerk of courts, appeared in Niles Municipal Court for his arraignment Monday morning. He was booked on a charge of felonious assault Friday.

According to a Niles Police Department report, a captain was contacted by a Trumbull County Children’s Services Board representative, who was told that a referral was made to them about a woman who was involved in a domestic violence incident Thursday afternoon.

Officers working security detail at Friday’s Niles McKinley High School football game with Girard made contact with Stanley, who was placed in handcuffs and taken to the Trumbull County jail.

When Randy Law was elected Trumbull County Clerk of Courts in the general election last November, he hired Stanley to serve as the chief deputy clerk of courts. Law said Monday afternoon that Monday’s developments were all “new and a little unexpected,” but they’re evaluating it daily.

“Right now we’re letting the process play out; we can believe in innocent until proven guilty and see where it goes from there,” Law said. “He’s got additional hearings, and we’ll evaluate those things at that time.”

“Nothing’s changed as of today — he’s not an elected official, he’s an at-will employee,” Law added.

Stanley was a private practice attorney before going to work as the chief deputy clerk of courts. He has also been serving as a Girard Municipal Court prosecutor.

He appears to still have a law office on Main Street in Niles. Stanley won reelection to a four-year term as Liberty Township trustee in November 2023.

Stanley is set to appear back in court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday, court records show.

Starting at $3.23/week.
