Girard Board of Education Candidates
Three candidates are seeking to fill two seats on the Girard Board of Education in the Nov. 4 general election. Incumbent Sue Ellen Harris-Davis is being challenged by political newcomers Scott Strain and Zak Steiner. Current board member Joseph Datchuck chose not to seek re-election to his seat.
NAME: Sue Ellen Harris-Davis
PREVIOUS POLITICAL OFFICE: Eight years on Girard Board of Education, six years as representative to Trumbull Career & Technical Center.
GOALS: Making sure the school campuses are safe for students and faculty with any needed improvements; updates in various academic areas and curriculum; student ownership in schools with service in the community and giving back to the community; continuing to showcase and show appreciation to students’ varied talents and achievements; offering students participation in more academic extracurricular programs, clubs and organizations; and focus on showcasing school spirit, loyalty and pride at board meetings and school community events.
NAME: Scott Strain
PREVIOUS POLITICAL OFFICE: None
GOALS: Focus on safety and success of the students; develop positive relationships with the teachers, administration and staff to foster growth and trust while maintaining transparency; former Girard school resource officer and juvenile investigator for six years, which allowed for developing trusting relationships with students and staff; working in conjunction with the administration and staff members; collaborating to provide a safe and secure environment for children to attend school; and contribute to building trusting relationships between the school families and community.
NAME: Zak Steiner
PREVIOUS POLITICAL OFFICE: None
GOALS: Start a “Listen and Learn” tour across the district, meeting directly with administrators, teachers, staff and students, and listening to what they need to be more successful; expand recognition and engagement at board meetings, in addition to recognizing students each month also recognize staff, alumni and school groups; make sure agendas, minutes, financial reports and other records are up to date and easily accessible on the district’s website; strengthening board committees to also include a mix of perspectives such as teachers, facilities and athletic staff, and outside experts where appropriate; and stay in contact with and work with the Ohio House on any upcoming or proposed changes to property tax and school funding to ensure the district’s needs are represented.
