Four seeking spots on Maplewood school board

Two incumbents and two political newcomers are seeking to fill three seats on the Maplewood Board of Education in the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

The incumbents are Tami Morrison and Dan Schwartz, with Sarah Turner and Tori Wiltrout the other two candidates.

Current board member Daniel Denman was removed by the Trumbull County election board in August.

Tami Morrison

Political experience: Eight years as a board of education member and four years as a member of the Trumbull Career / Technical Center board.

Goals: Continue fiscal responsibility when making decisions and securing funding from the state in providing a top quality education to the students; continuing the current curriculum and programs for students which help them succeed; continue the high level of excellence and ranking on state tests which has helped the district achieve 4.5 stars on state report cards; and having the Rocket Fuel program, which provides food and other items for students in need in the district over weekends.

Dan Schwartz

Political experience: 20 years as a board of education member.

Goals: Focus on state funding for the schools and what effect a property tax issue on the ballot next year will have on smaller rural school districts, such as losing local control; continued security in the schools; and reinforcing the academic excellence of the school district with the current excellent teaching staff and earning 4.5 stars on the state report card.

Sarah Turner

Political experience: First time seeking public office.

Goals: Focus on student advocacy to provide more support for teachers and students in the classrooms; looking at ways of getting bus drivers and substitute staff for the district, noting a current teacher is also trained as a bus driver; maintaining current school buildings; and looking at getting a school resource officer for the two school buildings.

Tori Wiltrout

Political experience: First time seeking public office.

Goals: Continue with the school district’s success with excellent scores on the state report card and state recognitions; making buildings as safe as possible for employees and students, and looking into a school resource officer; and be part of the decision-making by the board for the continued success of the district by providing what is needed for students and staff.

Starting at $3.23/week.
