Tale of life after war coming to Warren

‘Modern Warrior LIVE’ to bring veteran’s story to Robins Theatre

WARREN — A powerful show blending music and a soldier’s real-life story will come to Robins Theatre on Veterans Day, with the performance meant to help people understand the challenges veterans face after war.

“Modern Warrior LIVE” will come to the Robins Theatre in Warren at 7 p.m. Nov. 11. It tells the tale of Jaymes Poling, a U.S. Army veteran from Warren who served three tours in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Poling narrates his own experiences, from the dangers of combat to the tough road back to everyday life.

The performance mixes his words with live jazz music led by Dominick Farinacci, a trumpet player.

Farinacci, who grew up in Cleveland, created the show to highlight themes like strength, healing and finding new purpose. He started his music career young, performing for PBS at age 17 under mentor Wynton Marsalis. Later, he led jazz programs in Qatar and released albums around the world. For this project, he teamed up with Poling to use art as a way to talk about trauma.

Poling shares how he dealt with war memories, losing friends and feeling alone after leaving the military. Through speaking, writing and now music, he found ways to grow and help others. He has performed the show more than 120 times in places like schools, theaters, colleges and even a prison. Poling also visited troops in Afghanistan to discuss mental health.

Since starting, “Modern Warrior LIVE” has reached more than 40,000 people. It has built partnerships with mental health and veteran groups, connecting more than 4,000 individuals.

Surveys show that 75% of attendees feel more open to seeking help for their own mental health after the event.

Local Army veteran Herm Breuer helped bring the performance to Trumbull County. As a veteran advocate there, he wants to close the gap between civilians and those who served. Breuer hopes the show helps people gain a better understanding of the lives of their veteran friends, family members and neighbors.

Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis praised the project, calling it a “necessary and worthy mission” that honors veterans and their families.

The show continues to tour, including a one-hour film version, sharing stories of resilience to which anyone can relate.

Starting at $3.23/week.
