Prosecutor to review Lordstown police corruption allegations

LORDSTOWN — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took a look at complaints against the Lordstown Police Department.

But now, the case has been handed to the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office for further review. The probe started after a resident raised red flags in March.

A village resident spoke out at a March 17 council meeting. She said some officers working extra security jobs at the nearby Ultium Cells battery plant were ignoring small arrest warrants for workers there. Officers earn $70 an hour for those side gigs, she said.

She played a recording at the meeting of two men talking about an officer who skipped serving a minor traffic warrant. She called it “corruption” and compared the department to organized crime. She urged officials to put the officer on leave until an investigation wrapped up.

Police Chief Brent Milhoan told council that he had sent a letter to the BCI in April asking for help. The BCI is part of the Ohio attorney general’s office. Milhoan said he wanted a fair look into the claims.

Officials say off-duty officers can take side jobs like security work.

Starting at $3.23/week.
