CORTLAND — The Cortland Masonic Lodge and the Four Seasons Garden Club of Cortland teamed up Saturday for one of the lodge’s regular Saturday breakfasts, this one to enable the garden club to raise money to carry out its community service projects, such as installing flags on a Route 11 bridge near Cortland, taking care of flags and flowers in Cortland, and supporting the Cortland Cares food pantry.

The nonprofit group also raises money two times per year with flower sales that raise money for charities, said garden club member Stephanie Canzonetta.

The garden club partners with the Warren Junior Women’s League in putting up, taking down and maintaining the flags over Route 11, she said.

The flags are there to honor military veterans and service men and women.

The collaboration between the garden club and Masonic Lodge on Saturday involves lodge members doing the cooking of the breakfast food — pancakes, sausage, eggs and juice — and the members of the garden club serving it.

“They supply us with all of the food, and we come in and sell tickets and operate our 50 / 50 raffle and basket raffle, and all of the money goes to us, which is very generous of them,” Canzonetta said of the lodge members.

“Our club has been in the area for over 50 years,” Canzonetta said. “It’s (Cortland is) a nice community to belong to because people are always working with each other and helping, so it’s very nice,” she said.

John Onatz of Warren, who attended Saturday’s breakfast with his wife, Janet, said he likes to support the breakfasts at the Masonic Lodge, which is at 3263 Everett Hull Road, just over state Route 11 on what is called East Main Street in the city.

“It’s good food and we have friends who come here,” he said. “And we can give the corporate guys a break. These are the same people who are always here, selling the tickets, making the food, serving the food.”

The Four Seasons Garden Club is one of 17 organizations that get to host fundraiser breakfasts at the Masonic Lodge this year.

Its schedule started out the year in January with three different scouting groups hosting breakfasts, followed by groups such as a baseball team, Warren Civic Chorus, Cortland Christian Church, Job’s daughters, Mustangs Care, the Champion Robotics Club and the Blue Lodge Association.

The lodge hosts one or two breakfasts per month to support the various community organizations, lodge member Ernie Stewart of Bazetta said.

“We have people here every month. It all goes to charity,” said Masonic Lodge member Bob Barasch of Howland.

The idea to collaborate with other non-profits in this way started about six years ago, he said.

Starting at $3.23/week.
