Niles city, middle school to host safe streets events
NILES — Students from Niles Middle School will participate in a two-day event promoting street safety today and Tuesday on the streets surrounding their school building.
Brian McConnell, the Niles Middle School dean of students, and Bianca Rozenblad, Niles city planner / grant coordinator, have planned events in partnership with Trumbull County Public Health, Youngstown State University and Creating Healthy Communities.
The events intend to promote bike and street safety while simultaneously creating an opportunity to receive state grants for the city’s’ safety infrastructure projects.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., today students will be painting crosswalks on Second, Third and Brown Street with the Niles school colors, red and blue, as well as the school’s mascot, a dragon. The painted areas will be used as part of a temporary safe street demonstration.
On Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m., students from Gaye Breegle’s advanced science class will be participating in a bike rodeo in the painted demonstration area. The rodeo will help inform students about bike safety, including how to wear a helmet properly and how to cross a street safely. A bicycle, donated by the North and Main Beautification Committee of Niles, will be given away at the rodeo.
The demonstration area will be open to all walkers and bikers from Tuesday to Friday.
Second, Third and Brown Street will be closed for the duration of both events to ensure the safety of all participants, and drivers are asked to use caution in the area until the demo closes on Friday.
