11-year-old recovering from surgery following shooting
WARREN — An 11-year-old boy is recovering after undergoing surgery for a hand injury sustained in a shooting Wednesday night at a residence that is home to a family of four in the 300 block of Roosevelt Street NW, according to the child’s mother.
The boy’s mother, who requested her name not be used, said her son faces a two- to three-month recovery following the procedure. She said her son was walking to the bathroom to brush his teeth when gunshots rang out.
“I heard a gunshot, and then more shots went through my window,” she said, noting she saw blood coming from her son’s hand as she urged him to get down. “He was like a deer in headlights.”
Police responded to reports of a felonious assault involving a firearm at 9:54 p.m. Wednesday. The young victim was transported to St. Joseph Warren Hospital by emergency medical services for treatment.
Officers recovered 11 shell casings from the front yard of the residence, which were logged as evidence. The home’s exterior window and siding also were damaged, according to the report. The boy’s mother lives at the home with her four children.
Two neighbors, Dominic Milone and Keith Milone, reported hearing multiple gunshots just before 10 p.m. Dominic Milone, who lives next door, described the shots as “quick” and distinct from fireworks.
The report listed two unknown individuals in connection with the incident, but have released no further details about potential suspects. The investigation remains ongoing.
The boy’s mother said her son is upset and confused, particularly about missing his football and soccer seasons, where he would’ve competed in an upcoming tournament. No camera footage of the incident was available, as she said the family’s porch camera was misaligned earlier that day.
