Warren man arraigned in shooting at Convenient Food Mart
WARREN — A city man was arraigned Friday in connection with a deadly shooting outside a Convenient Food Mart on Elm Road that left one man dead and another injured, marking one of three violent shootings in the city over the Aug. 2 weekend.
Savion Woodall, 23, of Paige Avenue, pleaded not guilty to charges related to the Aug. 3 shooting before Warren Municipal Court Judge Natasha K. Natale.
The court determined that Woodall poses a “substantial risk of serious physical harm” to the community and ordered him held without bond.
The shooting occurred just before 5:30 a.m. Aug. 3 at the Convenient Food Mart at the corner of Elm Road and Larchmont Avenue on Warren’s northeast side, according to a Warren police report.
Police responded to reports of gunfire at 5:22 a.m. and found two male victims. David Lee Owens III, 31, of Warren, was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, while a second man, shot in both legs, was treated for injuries.
As many as 40 shell casings were recovered from the store’s parking lot, which was cordoned off as detectives investigated.
Store employees described a casual gathering involving dice games and food that turned violent after an argument and a thrown punch, escalating to gunfire within minutes.
“It was remarkable how quickly it went from laughing and hugging and eating pizza to one man beating on another and then just guns,” said Dawn Cobb, the store’s office manager.
The incident prompted city officials to secure a court order Aug. 7 to temporarily close the Convenient Food Mart, citing ongoing safety concerns and violations of an agreement to halt alcohol sales after 2 a.m.
A hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20 to determine if the store should remain closed.
In a related development, David Hollie, 46, was indicted and arraigned Thursday for a separate shooting on Scott Street Northeast that occurred hours before the Convenient Food Mart incident.
Hollie, charged with felonious assault and theft of a motor vehicle, allegedly shot a man in the forehead at 2:41 a.m. Aug. 3 and fled in a stolen vehicle that crashed during a police pursuit in Niles.
Warren police announced the arrests of Woodall and Hollie on social media.
“We would like to thank the community for their assistance and patience in these matters as we work diligently to bring those responsible to justice,” the post said.
The department continues to investigate both shootings, along with a third incident on Phillips Drive Southwest that left a woman injured.
No connections between the shootings have been confirmed.
