TCTC ready for new year

CHAMPION — With the new school year starting Monday for the more than 1,127 students who attend the Trumbull Career & Technical Center, various projects and improvements were completed over the summer.

Superintendent Jason Gray said at Thursday’s board meeting that among the projects were two former science classrooms that were remodeled into one large science lab, a new entry door and glass on the northside entrance, three parking lot catch basins replaced, and new sidewalks on the north side of the school leading to different entrances to the building.

He said many classrooms, offices and labs were painted and flooring work done.

Nearing completion are window leak repairs at the high school and adult education buildings, and new flagpole lights at the main entrance.

Board member Michele Garman, chairwoman of the facilities committee, said work is continuing on the 15,000-square-foot addition at the southeastern corner of the building. She said a full site development work crew has been working daily for the past two months on moving and replacing sanitary lines, storm lines, electrical lines and other work.

ENROLLMENT TOTALS

In other business, High School Director Paula Baco said enrollment as of Wednesday is 1,045 juniors and seniors and 82 freshmen and sophomores.

Warren has the most students attending at 129, followed by Niles at 88, Champion at 84, Howland at 82, and Hubbard at 75.

She said many programs are capped at 25 students and are full, with other programs like cosmetology at 66 students in grades 11th and 12th, followed by education and family services at 61 students and culinary arts academy at 55. Baco said the enrollment numbers may change some by next week.

Also, Baco discussed the Student Wellness and Success Fund plan, which uses money for student wellness and school security and safety through Cadence Care Network and Mercy Health, such as social workers and nurses.

Baco said security cameras also are being upgraded.

In other action, the board:

• Named Aime Crowder of Newton Falls as delegate and Danielle Scherer of Lakeview as alternate to the Ohio School Board Association conference in November.

• Received various donations, including a 2008 Chevy Impala, door panels, and assorted vehicle parts from auto businesses and individuals for the auto collision and auto service programs.

• Approved teacher Kris Doran’s supplemental contract as graphic/ video production specialist at $4,000 for the school year.

• Hired Juliann Ganoe as a paraprofessional at $31,746 replacing Eileen Sussman, who retired after nine years of service.
