Newton Falls to decide on expanding clerk’s duties

NEWTON FALLS — Village council will be deciding Wednesday whether to expand the duties of the clerk of council to also include administrative support duties for the planning and zoning commission and the parks and recreation board.

Council at a meeting in July tabled the ordinance for further review until the Wednesday meeting. Councilman Brian Axiotis, D-2nd Ward, said the planning and zoning commission and the parks and recreation board do not meet as often as village council, and meetings often are canceled when there is a lack of agenda items.

He said both meetings need someone to take care of recording the minutes.

The ordinance is proposing the clerk’s salary be increased from $37,500 to $43,500 with no benefits because of the additional duties of the two monthly meetings. Axiotis said some meetings are less than 10 minutes while others are longer based on what is discussed.

The clerk now attends and takes minutes for the two monthly meetings of council.

A member of the planning and zoning and park and recreation boards has been taking the minutes.

In other business, at the July 23 meeting, council:

• Heard from police Chief John Barco of grants being sought for bulletproof vests and other items. He said some police vehicles that can no longer be used have been placed on govdeals.com for auction.

• Approved the purchase of a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado of Randolph from Sarchione Chevrolet for the electric department, which replaces a 39-year old vehicle. The vehicle will cost $62,586.

• Approved creating the position of electric foreman supervisor in the electric department and the rate of pay for this position to be the hourly wage of the employee who is in the position at the time plus an additional $2 per hour. Officials said the position would be second in command of the department.

• Reminded residents to not blow grass into the street when mowing their yard.

Starting at $3.23/week.
