County ballots include 20 tax issues

WARREN — Voters throughout Trumbull County will be asked to consider 20 tax issues on the Nov. 4 ballot, but only three involve new money.

The additional requests are a 1.5-mill, continuous levy for police protection in Cortland and a 2.9-mill continuous levy for emergency medical services in Farmington. Voters in Vernon Township will be asked to approve a 2.5-mill replacement, continuous levy for fire and EMS protection.

The rest of the levies are all renewals, including a 2-mill, five-year renewal for Trumbull County Children Services, a half-percent income tax renewal in Warren specifically for the fire, police and road departments, and two renewal levies in Bazetta — one for the police department and the other for the fire department, which also includes ambulance service.

Three school districts — Bristol, Champion and Newton Falls — are seeking renewals. Newton Falls is seeking a 10-year option, while the others are seeking five-year renewals.

In addition to the tax issues, those running for township trustees, boards of education and council seats in Cortland, Orangeville and West Farmington had to file by Wednesday’s deadline with the Trumbull County Board of Elections. The board is scheduled to meet Aug. 14 to certify candidates and issues to the ballot.

Wednesday’s deadline did not apply to candidates who previously filed for municipal elections in Warren, Niles, Girard, Hubbard, Newton Falls, Lordstown and McDonald. They will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot.

CANDIDATES

Seven candidates filed for four seats on Cortland council, with Kevin Piros as the only incumbent. Six people filed for four seats on West Farmington village Council, including the four incumbents.

Four people filed for Howland trustee, with incumbents James LaPolla and Matthew Vansuch being challenged by Theo Kafantaris and Dawn Nicholas. Some of the townships, including Bloomfield, Brookfield, Champion, Farmington, Fowler, Gustavus, Newton, Southington and Weathersfield, had only two people file for two seats. Vernon Township only drew one candidate, incumbent Jeffrey McGhee.

In Vienna, former longtime trustee Heidi Brown filed to run for fiscal officer. Jason Miner was named to replace former fiscal officer Linda McCullough, who recently was sentenced to prison for theft in office charges.

Not enough candidates filed for the boards of education in Hubbard, Bloomfield-Mespo, Bristol, Joseph Badger, LaBrae, Mathews, McDonald, Southington and Weathersfield.

Aug. 25 is the write-in deadline.

The following candidates, all running nonpartisan, and issues filed for the Nov. 4 general election by Wednesday’s deadline. An * denotes incumbents. The Trumbull County Board of Elections needs to certify the candidates and issues. This list does not include candidates who previously filed for municipal elections in Warren, Niles, Girard, Hubbard, Newton Falls, Lordstown and McDonald. Unless otherwise noted, all township trustees are two to elect, boards of elections are three to elect and village and city councils are four to elect.
