Cortland man sentenced in fatal pile-up crash

WARREN — A Cortland man who caused a fatal chain reaction crash by rear ending stopped traffic has begun serving a two-week jail sentence after being ordered to two years’ probation, 200 hours of community service and a loss of his driving privileges for one year.

Anthony Marble-Salem, 19, reported Tuesday to the Trumbull County jail following his sentencing in Trumbull County Central District Court by Judge Thomas Campbell.

Marble-Salem pleaded guilty in May to vehicular homicide.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the Oct. 17, 2024, crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. when Marble-Salem, then 18, was driving a 2021 Audi A7 south on state Route 5 in Bazetta.

As he approached a red light at state Route 305, he struck the rear of a 2015 Ford Escape driven by Nicholas Stoian, 38, of Cortland.

The impact pushed the Escape into a 2012 Mazda 3, which was forced underneath a 1998 Saturn SL2. The Saturn then struck the rear of a 2011 Chrysler Town and Country, which hit the rear of a 2017 Nissan Murano.

Stoian was taken by the Bazetta Fire Department to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.

Troopers said distracted driving is believed to have been a contributing factor in the six-vehicle crash. No other details about the investigation were immediately available.

Starting at $3.23/week.
