Cortland man life-flighted with severe brain bleed after fight in bar parking lot
WARREN — A Cortland man was life-flighted to a Youngstown hospital with a severe brain bleed after a violent assault outside a Warren bar early Monday, according to a Warren police report.
The attack, captured on security footage, has prompted an investigation into a felonious assault at Kracker Jack’s bar, with police seeking three unidentified suspects.
The victim, identified as Jayson Freeman of Cortland, was found unconscious in the parking lot of Kracker Jacks, 3315 Youngstown Road SE, around 3:31 a.m. Monday.
Officers and EMTs who responded observed Freeman on the ground, with medical staff believing it to be a traumatic brain injury. A CT scan at St. Joseph Warren Hospital later confirmed Freeman had suffered a severe brain bleed. Medical staffers advised an emergency transfer to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital’s trauma unit, the report states.
According to the incident report, security footage from the bar showed the victim engaged in a physical altercation with three men in the parking lot.
The footage depicts one suspect, described as a taller black male with long dreadlocks wearing a blue t-shirt and shorts, kicking the victim in the head at least twice with “hard impact” and stomping his face, causing him to lose consciousness.
Two other suspects, a male in a gray T-shirt and black pants with a short haircut, and a light-skinned male in a light-colored tank top and jeans, also were involved, but backed away during the most severe part of the assault, the security footage shows.
The bar’s owner, George S. Sfikas, provided additional footage showing the suspects lingering outside after closing, refusing to leave despite efforts to disperse them.
The report notes that the victim’s vehicle was found running with its door open in the parking lot.
