Cortland is smoke testing sewer lines
CORTLAND — The city is having smoke testing done on the sanitary sewers to determine where rain water is getting into the system.
City council at a recent meeting approved an agreement with King’s Sanitary Service of Bristolville for the smoke testing at $17,840.
Interim Service Director Sean Ratican said the testing will identify and locate where rain water is seeping into the sanitary sewer system.
He said there have been many places in the city where there has been extensive flooding this spring and summer, which has caused problems.
Ratican said what the smoke testing shows will determine the next steps to address the issue, such as seeking grants to cover any costs.
“We first will identify the locations,” Ratican said.
He said the sanitary sewer is not equipped to take storm water, noting the rainfall is often a lot of water in a very short time.
Residents will be notified by door fliers as to when the smoke testing in their neighborhoods will be taking place.
In other business, council approved purchasing body cameras, accessories and cloud-based services at $13,000 from Midwest Public Safety of Minneapolis for the police department.
The police department had previously received two grants from the Office of Criminal Justice Services which will cover the costs.
The new items will replace older ones.
Also, Ratican said he will be working with the park committee to discuss future projects. He said there have been discussions on updates to some of the splash pad fixtures or additions.
Ratican added that he and the park committee will work on a strategic plan for updates at recreational facilities.
He noted the splash pad has been very well used this summer, with repeatedly high temperatures.
In other matters, council:
• Was informed the fire and police departments each received $5,000 donations from the American Legion Post 540. The police plan to use the funds for updating police computers.
• Was informed the street sweeper is back in service and being used.
