Two sentenced in robberies

WARREN — Two men convicted in a series of armed robberies across Trumbull and Mahoning counties faced sentencing this week in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, following a crime spree that targeted a pizza shop and gas stations in early January.

Shane T. Adams, 32, of Austintown, was sentenced Wednesday by Judge Sean J. O’Brien to an indefinite prison term of six to seven-and-a-half years. Adams pleaded guilty May 8 to one count of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, with a three-year firearm specification.

Adams also has other cases in Mahoning County Common Pleas court related to the robberies to which he pleaded guilty in May before Judge Anthony M. D’Apolito. He’s awaiting sentencing on the Mahoning County convictions.

The plea, which offset a jury trial scheduled for Aug. 4, developed from a Jan. 2 robbery at a Papa John’s pizza shop on Belmont Avenue in Liberty.

Tylin Fairchild, 32, of Clinton, appeared before Judge Sarah Thomas Kovoor on Tuesday. Fairchild pleaded to charges of aggravated robbery with a firearm specification and an additional count of failure to comply with a police officer’s order, a felony that could add years to his sentence if convicted.

Fairchild also still has a case related to the robberies pending in Mahoning County. His next appearance will be Aug. 7 in D’Apolito’s courtroom.

According to police reports, the crime spree began in the early hours of Jan. 3, targeting a Shell gas station in Austintown, another in Canfield, and the Papa John’s in Liberty.

A Canfield police officer, alerted to the Austintown robbery, spotted a slender man in dark clothing fleeing the Canfield Shell station toward a Chevrolet Trailblazer parked at a former Perkins restaurant. An off-duty officer confirmed the robbery, prompting a pursuit involving Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers.

The Trailblazer, registered to Fairchild, briefly stopped during a traffic stop but fled, leading police on a chase at speeds of 50 to 60 mph. The SUV ran a red light and passed an Ohio Department of Transportation salt truck before evading capture temporarily. Youngstown police later located the vehicle at Powersdale and Cameron avenues on Youngstown’s South Side around 7 a.m., and one suspect was apprehended at Cooper and Union streets.

Both Adams and Fairchild were taken into custody, with Fairchild found in an ambulance and Adams transported to Canfield’s police station.

Police reports state the SUV was linked to four robberies across the two counties, with Liberty police identifying Adams and Fairchild as suspects in the Papa John’s robbery.
