WHAT: City council meeting Monday

PRESENT: Reynald Paolone, Jeff Kay, Sam Zirafi, Lily Martuccio, Thomas Grumley, John Moliterno, Keith Schubert and Mark Standohar

ABSENT: Mayor Mark Zuppo

Council:

• Approved contracts with Rudzik Excavating of Struthers for the Mosier Road waterline project at $393,056 and with Kirila Contractors of Brookfield for paving of Park Avenue from Ward to Tod avenues at $149,863. Safety-Service Director Mark Ragozine said both projects will begin this summer.

• Heard from Auditor Julie Coggins that American Rescue Plan funds covered the $15,750 cost for asbestos removal at the Wellman Theater. The theater committee will meet at 9 a.m. Aug. 21.

• Approved giving the Ohio Department of Transportation approval for sign replacement for state Route 11 within the city limits at no cost to the city,

• Heard from Grumley a citywide cleanup involving local businesses along the Route 422 corridor is being planned for Sept. 20.

• Heard from resident Vernon Mitchell of West Prospect Street regarding needed improvements at the park on the street, such as more swings for children. He said there is also a problem with many stray cats on the street.

• Approved a rezone change request from residential to general business district on one parcel off Cherry Street so Past Times Arcade can expand employee parking.

• Requested legislation be prepared for the Sept. 8 meeting to update the city zoning maps. Martuccio said the county planning commission is updating the maps.

Trumbull County

WHAT: Board of Developmental Disabilities meeting Monday

PRESENT: Melissa Baker, Mary Cunningham, Mauro DiVieste, Jodi Glaser, Kimberly Hynes and Larry Larson

The board:

• Accepted the resignation of Elizabeth Calderone as a board member for personal reasons. The Trumbull County Probate Court will appoint someone to fill the remainder of the four-year term through December 2027.

• Reported work is continuing at the offices at the Tomaski Center off North Road and is expected to be completed by the end of August, with employees returning to the building in early September. An open house for the public is set Sept. 18.

• Announced students will return to school Aug. 25.

• Announced the fourth annual Ability Walk and Roll is set 4 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 at Eastwood Field in Niles.

• Approved Christina Rudy as executive assistant to the service and support administration department on a one-year contract. She replaces Deborah Tomko, who retired.

• Approved Savannah Sheely as community and public relations specialist, effective July 3, which is a new position.

• Approved Shannon Shelton as assistant principal effective June 23, replacing Michelle Ocilka-Yeckle, who was named principal.

• Promoted Justin Torres to facilities maintenance supervisor effective July 1.

• Approved an agreement with the Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio for up to 80 days of school psychology services for the 2025-26 school year.
