Nonprofit board training workshop set
Staff report
Leadership Mahoning Valley will present its On Board! Board Training Workshop 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 14 at The Grand Resort, 9519 E. Market St., Howland.
Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors and what it takes to be an effective nonprofit board member. Topics will include foundational best practices in nonprofit governance.
The training will provide participants with an understanding of the sector, the basic tenets of governance and their individual roles and responsibilities as nonprofit leaders.
Beth Short, director of Charitable Outreach and Education for the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section will be the guest presenter. Short has spent her career working for and with nonprofit organizations. Her passion for the nonprofit sector is evidenced by her professional and volunteer background working with charities as a staff member, board member, consultant and volunteer for large and small organizations.
She brings a background in journalism, legislative and public affairs and training, complemented by a master’s in business that focused on nonprofit management issues. Her work in the Charitable Law Section focuses on the development of strategies aimed at strengthening the nonprofit sector.
The program is designed for new and established board members and nonprofit leadership. It will include content from Charitable University, a new learning platform developed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. The platform provides tools on some of the most important elements in leading a charitable organization: board governance, governmental filings, financial operations and internal controls, filings and recordkeeping and fundraising.
Charitable board members, staff and volunteers need to understand the legal obligations that are intended to protect charitable assets and those who rely on the services provided by the nonprofit sector.
Participants who complete the daylong training program will be included in the new Leadership Mahoning Valley BoardMatch program, which will connect individuals interested in serving on boards, with nonprofit organizations in need of board members.
Charitable leaders who complete the training also will receive completion credit for the program and their names listed on the Attorney General’s webpage as acknowledgement of their commitment. They will also receive a completion certificate.
Reservations are required, and the cost to attend is $60 per person. Groups of six may register at a reduced rate of $300. A continental breakfast and lunch are included.
